Mind your language: Polish girl, 16, gets top exam results

POLISH pupil Aneta Lukianska has defied the language barrier to notch up a string of top-class results in her GCSE examinations.

POLISH pupil Aneta Lukianska has defied the language barrier to notch up a string of top-class results in her GCSE examinations. After just two years in England the 16-year-old pupil at Wisbech Grammar School achieved seven A* grades, two As and one B.

Aneta, from Wisbech St Mary, near Wisbech, had only visited England once in her life for a holiday when she moved to this country two years ago and she was plunged into the GCSE courses.

She had been learning English as a foreign language in Poland, and she was able to communicate, but she was not fluent, and she took some extra lessons with one of her teachers, Digby Munns, to help her catch up.

She said: "I found that the material we were covering in school was easier than in Poland, but the language difficulty made the challenge roughly equal. I had to re-read my notes after lessons to make sure I understood everything."

The modest pupil explained how nervous she was to discover how she had coped in the examinations when results day arrived.

She said: "When I came into school to collect the results I was afraid to open the envelope, but when I uncovered the grades I discovered they were quite good."

Now Aneta is working hard at five AS-level subjects as a member of the lower sixth form at the grammar school, studying chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics and French, and she is setting her sights on reading medicine or veterinary science at university – and she knows that she will once again need to achieve the highest grades if she is to realize her ambition.

Headmaster Nicholas Hammond said: "We are absolutely delighted with her performance and it reflects her hard work, talent and the support she has received from the school."
