May 2008: The month football came home to the city

THE official start of summer saw the city still in the grip of a "Ride-by-Robber" who claimed his 16th victim.

Local election fever also struck at the beginning of May with heavy security visible at 72 polling stations around Peterborough to prevent any chances of another vote-rigging scandal.

Peterborough United turned the atmosphere blue in the city centre – but for all the right reasons.

Thousands of proud football fans turned up to create memorable scenes on Long Causeway and Cathedral Square as they celebrated Posh's nail-biting promotion to League One.

And the city said a fond farewell to departing mayor Marion Todd, who was replaced by fellow councillor Pat Nash.

However, the choice of deputy mayor was mired in controversy as convicted benefit cheat Gul Nawaz was appointed.

The councillor, who represents Ravensthorpe, defended his nomination saying "the past is the past".

News that Peterborough's main post office may be forced to move out of the city centre was greeted by uproar.

This sparked a war of words between Peterborough City Council and Post Office chiefs over the plans for the demolition of the Corn Exchange.

It was also revealed that almost 2,000 people had been fined for dropping rubbish in the city centre since a crackdown on litter louts was launched.

Peterborians were also intrigued by mystery lights floating in the skies above the city, causing much speculation among UFO enthusiasts about a forthcoming alien visit.

The answer however turned out to be a lot more closer to home with the lights being identified as Chinese lanterns.

And May also saw the rather unusual delivery of little Alicia James in Orton Goldhay.

The tot was born after mum, Kerry Mehmet, feeling rather flush popped into the loo at home – and promptly gave birth.

The bouncing healthy baby was delivered by her proud grandmother in their bathroom at home.
