Love of council at heart of relationship

TWO married city council members say their shared love of local Government – and each other – helps them both to do their best for the people they represent.John and Judy Fox, are both independent councillors for Werrington North – Judy for three-and-a-half-years, John for five-and-a-half. They have been man and wife for 11 years.
John said: "Judy used to come with me on all my council business, and do as much as, if not more than, some elected councillors, and so I encouraged her to stand.
"She used to come with me to see people, but have to sit in the car because what they were saying was confidential, but now she can come in and help the person as well. If people call us for help, they tend to get the both of us, but they say that two heads are better than one."
John (56) said a shared love of anything can only make a couple stronger. "If a man really love fishing and his partner doesn't, his partner might get bored by it, but if they both enjoy it, then everyone's a winner," he said. "It makes everything easier. And it's not as though we are with each other for eight hours a day in an office."

As for whether the pressures of casework ever cause trouble between the two, John said: "Judy's got her own mind, and we debate something, and then we make our own decisions about it, but we don't fall out over council work.
"We give each other advice, but it is up to that person whether they want to listen to it or not."
The pair met when John was taking aid convoys to Croatia. He went to visit one of his convoy pals who had fallen ill, and got chatting to Judy (59), who was his friend's neighbour.
He said: "We hit it off right from the start. We were so confident of each other that we took three of our children on our second date! If we have a problem, we talk about it – Judy will never hold a grudge or go to bed on an argument. I wouldn't swap her for the world."
