A supervisor has retired after more than 33 years manning Yaxley's library. But Kath Perry's love for reading is far from reaching the final chapter and will become one of her many hobbies throughout her retirement.

More than 33 years ago, Mrs Perry (63), from Dovecote Lane, Yaxley, saw an advert for a library assistant at Yaxley Library, in Landsdowne Road, and decided to give it a shot.

To her amazement, she got the job and soon became supervisor.

"I had some experience of working in libraries and I knew the job would fit well around my children and taking them to school so I thought why not," Mrs Perry said.

"I loved the job so much but it is not the same as it used to be. When I first started we used to have little green tickets in the books and stamp each one when they were taken out.

"Now everything is done on the computer. I have also learned a lot from my years at the library, not just from reading books but also understanding how to use the computer and internet.

"Yaxley Library has grown so much over the years and we now take part in the summer reading challenge and hold story time and rhymetime sessions."

Mrs Perry said the best part about the job was meeting members of the community and seeing children engrossed in a book.

She added: "I will miss being able to advise people on a good book to read and catching up with all of the regular visitors to the library.

"I hope the library continues to be a central part of the community. It is an excellent local facility and people need to keep taking advantage of it. In this day and age we cannot afford to lose such a valuable service to the community."

To celebrate her retirement Mrs Perry was presented with leaving cards from the local school children.

The grandmother now plans to use her spare time taking extra holidays, gardening and reading.
