July 2008: Shame of vote fraud ex-mayor

July started with a bang, with the Peterborough Festival taking over the city.

July started with a bang, with the Peterborough Festival taking over the city.Dozens of events in a number of venues saw residents relaxing in a rare weekend of glorious summer sun, with the highlight being jazz legend Acker Bilk performing a one-off concert in Central Park.

However, the festival ended with problems after a scheduled outdoor screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show had to be moved because of technical problems.

And the Hydromania show at the Embankment caused even more controversy after families were shocked by the performance of the Incredible Squirting Man – where jets of water where shot out from intimate parts of the performer's body in time to music.

The Evening Telegraph's Hands Off Our Post Offices campaign generated massive support, with residents desperate to try to save their local post office, after it was announced the Woodston, New England, West Town, and seven others in the wider area, were all under threat of closure.

Hundreds of primary school children waiting to hear their exam results before moving to secondary school were left in the dark.

Problems with the marking of the SATS exams taken by the 11-year-olds meant that many youngsters did not receive their grades for over a month after they were due.

And many of the schools that did receive their results were given the wrong grades.

The month ended with another former city mayor facing jail after being convicted of vote rigging.

Raja Akhtar, who had held the city's top job in 2004, was convicted on one count of fraud relating to the 2004 local elections after a trial in Kings Lynn.

His conviction followed that of 1996 city Mayor Mohammed Choudhary, who was jailed earlier in the year.

Four other men were also convicted of forgery relating to the same election.
