January 2008: Crime shocks as Sammy swims in

Two teenagers who savagely attacked a man and then threw him in a river and watched him drown were locked up.

Two teenagers who savagely attacked a man and then threw him in a river and watched him drown were locked up.Evil James Quantrill and Thomas Orme kicked drunk and helpless Toby Atkin (25), burned him with cigarette lighters and filmed themselves heaving him into the water in Spalding in 2007.

A jury cleared them of murder, but found them guilty of manslaughter.

A judge sentenced Quantrill, then 17, to five years' detention and Orme, then 15, to three and a half years.

It was revealed that arson attacks in Peterborough had cost the city an estimated staggering 7 million in 2007.

That is how much it cost the agencies involved in tackling and clearing up the debris – including the fire service, insurance companies, the city council and property owners – left by mindless yobs wreaking havoc.

A MOTHER and father who watched their baby "die" 10 times as doctors fought tirelessly to save him, spoke of the miracle that saved their beloved son.

Clare Taylor and partner Marc Hall, from Farcet, near Peterborough, feared they were going to lose baby Ethan at just 10 months old because of a critical heart defect he was born with.

Ethan was only the fourth child in the country under the age of one to survive a major operation that pushed the boundaries of medical science.

Doctors decided Ethan's only chance of survival was to have a procedure called radiofrequency ablation, which was carried out through keyhole surgery at Glenfield Hospital, in Leicester.

Peterborough's favourite seal made a reappearance in the River Nene after a year frolicking elsewhere.

Sammy the seal put a smile on the faces of passers-by who spotted him playing in the water, almost a year after his first appearance.

At the time, however, an RSPCA officer said that although it may have been the same visitor, it was "unlikely".
