AN INTREPID graduate from Thorney will face some of the toughest obstacles nature has to offer when he embarks on a 2,000-mile horseback trek across the Andes.Former Edinburgh University student Ed Lines (23), of Whittlesey Road, will ride through sweltering jungles, across arid deserts and over freezing mountains for the epic, five-month journey from Ecuador to La Paz, Bolivia.

The ambitious adventurer will be joined by university friends Nick Warner (23) and Phil Sutton (24) for the trek, with the overall aim to raise more than 30,000 for charity.

The trio flew out to South America yesterday and do not expect to return until July.

Speaking before they left, Mr Lines said he expected to face challenges unlike any he had experienced before.

He said: “For us this trip is about helping others who haven’t had what we’ve had. If we have to learn new things and completely remove ourselves from our comfort zones to do it, then so be it.”

Proceeds from the trek will be divided between the Alzheimer’s Society and Bruce Organisation, a Latin America-based charity providing education to street children.
