Sean Hughes brings his stand up show: 'What I Meant To Say Was....' to the Peterborough Key Theatre next Friday (5 February). They are again this season, and both teams are fighting their own struggles. Posh sit rock bottom, and Palace have just entered administration.
They face each other again at Selhurst Park, tomorrow afternoon.
No doubt this topic will come up in Sean's stand up show at the Peterborough Key Theatre next Friday (5 February).
It's called What I Meant To Say Was...., and he took time out to speak to The Guide ahead of the show.
Star of The Last Detective (ITV), Never Mind The Buzzcocks (BBC) and Sean's Show (Channel 4) Hughes' dark, explosive style and quick-fire audience banter has made him a household name.
His Peterborough live debut is your chance to see exactly why Sean's arrival on the stand-up scene (he won the Perrier Award in 1990) opened the door for younger comics and changed the face of UK comedy.
Insistent and unapologetic, Hughes continues to push comedy to the very edge, joyfully funny yet relentlessly uncompromising, he truly is a man in tune with his craft.
Speaking to The Guide, Sean revealed that he prefers his shows to be made of "honest stuff".
He'll browse the local press before each show, looking for inspiration to give that night's performance a more familiar feeling.
He said: "I find the shows are a brilliant way to talk about things. For me it's quite important to find issues that the audience are familiar with.
"It's also good to talk, especially because I don't get out much anymore! I've found that now I'm 44, I'm a lot more comfortable with Sky Plus than the pub."
Many of you will be familiar with Sean as a former team captain on Nevermind The Buzzcocks. He would regularly battle wits with Mark Lamarr and Phill Jupitus, and viewing figures soared.
But, after six years with the music comedy programme, he decided to call it a day in 2002. He felt the format was too much of a routine for him.
Since leaving the show, he has made appearances in programmes such as Coronation Street and Agatha Christie.
"I wanted to do something my mum could be proud of," he said.
Now returning to stand-up, Sean is glad to be back on stage, and this is echoed in glowing reviews of his show, which have come from all quarters.
Tickets for the Key Theatre show, on Friday, February 5, cost 16 from 01733 207239. The show starts at 8pm.
