A PAIR of history buffs from Orton Longueville have delved into the history of Peterborough in a bid to provide an insight into the past and present of the city.Vernon and June Bull from Orton Longueville, Peterborough, have put together Peterborough Through Time using well-kept photos and carefully selected postcards.

The 96 page book examines well-known streets and famous faces in the late 19th century, throughout the 20th and into the 21st century.

The couple were approached by publishers Amberley to make the book, which is a sequel to their history book Peterborough Then and Now, published in 1992.

But these are not the only books the pair have produced, their first publication was in 1988 called Peterborough - A Portrait in Old Picture Postcards and was reprinted in 1989 and again in 1991.

The book shows the roller-skating pavilion rink in Broadway, which is now a Tesco, the volunteer fire brigade of 1912, city police of 1908 Peterborough City Football Club of 1909 and Brotherhood Engineering Works in Walton where their first steam turbine was designed and manufactured.

June, who is Hon. Secretary of Peterborough Local History Society, said: "We trust the book offers a fascinating insight into how Peterborough looked in the early years of the twentieth century. It is not meant to be a history of Peterborough, but rather a glance back in time, with the help of photographers who have left us with a unique social record of the city's life and appearance over a century ago in glass plate, picture postcards and photographs.

"We have merely added carefully researched commentary which will appeal to researchers, family historians and all those absorbed in Peterborough."

Vernon (56) and June's (54) highlights of the book include the spectacle of Buffalo Bill's wild west show which came to Peterborough in 1903 and was attended by 7,000 people.

They also enjoyed researching into villages including Woodston, New England and Fletton which are now subsumed into Peterborough.

The couple are currently working on a sequel to the book called Pioneer Women of Peterborough.
