History

1 April, 1852: Great Northern Hotel is opened at a cost of 2,500. It was designed by architect Henry Goddard and during its early life, its ownership was linked with that of the nearby railway.

Post 1945: The hotel re-opened in November 1949 after World War II after having had some repairs carried out.

In the '50s it was a popular venue for wedding receptions and among those who celebrated there was comedian Ernie Wise.

1982: It was put up for sale in 1982 by British Rail, which was de-nationalising parts of its non-railway empire.

1993: After a number of owners, the latest chapter of the hotel's life started in 1993, when millionaire Pizza Express founder Peter Boizot bought it.

February, 2009: It is confirmed the hotel is in the hands of the administrators.

22 April, 2009: Hotel is bought for 3 million by a consortium of Peterborough businessmen with former Posh footballer Lee Power fronting the deal.

1 July, 2009: Hotel is closed for six months for renovations.

2 July, 2009: Letter to staff announcing Cre8 is in the hands of liquidators and staff are to be made redundant.
