German insult trial jury discharged for legal reasons

THE trial of a man accused of racial harassment after he allegedly called his German neighbour a "schweinhund" has been halted.

THE trial of a man accused of racial harassment after he allegedly called his German neighbour a "schweinhund" has been halted.A judge at Lincoln Crown Court said “legal reasons” meant he had to discharge the jury halfway through the second day of the hearing.

Clive Robinson was said to have used the insult against Cristine Hurst because of her nationality.

The incident allegedly occurred as magistrate Mrs Hurst was taking in her washing at her smallholding in Weston Hills, near Spalding.

Robinson (45) later admitted making the remark – which translates as “pig dog” – but claimed he was referring to one of his great Danes.

Robinson, of Broadgate, Weston Hills, denies a charge of racially-aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress, on January 24 last year.

He could now face a new trial later this year after prosecutors were given a fortnight to decide how they intend to proceed with the case.

Recorder Simon King said: “Within 14 days, the prosecution should notify the court and the defence of their intentions in this matter.”
