1960s supporting crooner Frank Ifield.It was reported that The Beatles were a flop with fans who had come to see Ifield, and afterwards promoter Arthur Howes was quoted as saying the audience "sat on their hands" during the moptops' performance.

However, The Beatles, with Love Me Do already reaching number 17 in the charts, weren't to be daunted and returned to the city in March 1963 as

pop's newest stars and received a "shattering ovation".

The Evening Telegraph reported how the signatures of the Beatles scrawled in a hotel visitors' book were sold for an incredible 4,700 to a mystery buyer.

The Beatles signed the hotel book on December 2, 1962, when they played at the old Embassy Theatre before they hit the big time.
