The city population was 74,898 in the 2006 census, while the census metropolitan area (CMA) had a population of 116,570 – the 33rd and smallest CMA in Canada.

HISTORY
Peterborough is known as the gateway to the "cottage country" of the Kawarthas, a large recreational region of the province. The city is named in honour of Peter Robinson, an early Canadian politician who oversaw the first major immigration to the area. The city is the seat of Peterborough County, and since 1983 has been sister city to Ann Arbor, Michigan.
SPORTS
Peterborough is well known for its junior level hockey team, the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League, who were established in 1956.
ATTRACTIONS
The Peterborough Centennial Museum & Archives is home to a diverse collection of artifacts. The Trent-Severn Waterway passes through Peterborough and includes the Peterborough Lift Lock, the world's largest hydraulic lift lock, which opened in 1904.
ECONOMY
Manufacturing although no longer the dominant local industry, is still one of the key sectors along with food processing, automotive supplies, electronics, aerospace and life sciences/biotechnology.
