Drama group bids for Tesco cash

A HAMPTON drama society is urging residents to get out and vote to give the group a chance of a much-needed windfall.Hampton Amateur Theatre Society (HATS) has been nominated as one of three potential recipients of Tesco's new local community fund for this month.
The fund has been set up by the supermarket to help community projects in the area, with a total of 1,000 available to be split between the three groups.
To decide how much of the money each group gets, residents are being asked to vote for their local society.
Voting booths have been set up in Serpentine Green shopping centre, and members of the award-winning amateur dramatics society are urging as many people as possible to go and help HATS out.
Secretary of the group Giselle Rawlings said: "This money means that a fun community group can carry on running.
"A lot of people have made a great number of friends here, and it would mean a lot if we could get as much as possible from this fund.
"The money would help us pay rent for the hire of the community room in Hampton, our annual subscription to the National Operatic and Dramatic Association, as well as costumes, sets and props for our next show."
Despite being overwhelmed by the nomination, Miss Rawlings said she was unsure as to why the group had been selected.
She said: "No one at the society works at Tesco, so we are assuming that it was someone who saw one of our plays who nominated us.
"People have four weeks to vote for us, and it would be fantastic if people from Hampton would go along and vote."
The society is currently looking through a number of scripts before deciding what play it will perform next year, although Miss Rawlings said that an announcement was expected within the next couple of weeks.
And after raising money for Sue Ryder Care Thorpe hall hospice, in Peterborough, during its last run, the group will take part in a photo shoot for the charity at the weekend, to be included in their literature.
The group meets at Hampton Hargate Community Room, Hargate Way, on Tuesdays at 7.30pm.
