Don't they get married young these days?

Peakirk-cum-Glinton Primary School pupils received a lesson in love and marriage when the village's youngest bride and groom exchanged wedding vows in a lavish ceremony.Puppy love was certainly in the air for the two six-year-olds, as they said "I will" at a Glinton church during a special service.

The mini-marriage was part of the school's Religious Education studies, and children in Year 1 were invited to attend a pretend wedding ceremony to learn more about marriage.

The children, aged five and six, also took on the roles of bridesmaids, best man and mother-of-the-bride, as the bride and groom, known to classmates as Yi Xuen and Rory, exchanged vows in front of their friends and relatives.

On a normal school day, the only register they would have to worry about is the one to mark school attendance, but with other junior witnesses, the duo duly signed their names carefully to seal the deal.

Then, in a hail of confetti and clutching her bouquet, the blushing bride and her groom made their way out of the church.

The service was followed by a reception back at the school in Rectory Lane, Glinton, near Peterborough, where the youngsters got to cut a traditional wedding cake and read their own speeches, albeit without the usual drunken heckling witnessed at grown-up weddings.

Year 1 class teacher Becki Stevens said: "This is an annual tradition we have been running for some years now, and one that both the children and parents look forward to.

"All of the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves, especially being able to dress up and take on different roles. A lot of them haven't even been to a wedding before, so it is a completely new experience for them."

But rest assured the "marriage" for the youngsters will not be until "death do us part", in fact it will only be until the end of term, when the bride jets off across the world.

Miss Stevens added: "We chose Yi for the bride because she is going back to Singapore in the summer and we wanted to send her off with some lovely memories of her time at the school."
