A SPEEDING motorist was caught in the act every two minutes during a community road safety campaign in Ramsey.Volunteers from the Ramsey Speedwatch group spent an hour monitoring traffic in Upwood Road and clocked dozens of drivers breaking the 30mph limit.
None of the motorists face being fined, but each will be sent letters by police reminding them to curb their speed in future.
Community campaigner Alan Wilcher said the findings of the vigil highlighted the scale of the problem of speeding in the area.
He said: “It’s a clear problem. In the space of an hour we found cars were exceeding the 30mph limit every two minutes, mainly in the region of 35 to 50mph.
“There were some that were going even faster, but as soon as they saw the Speedwatch camera, you could hear them slamming on the brakes. There were also quite a few we noticed on their mobile phones, which is really quite disturbing.”
More Speedwatch vigils are being planned in Ramsey over the coming weeks, with Warboys Road, St Mary’s Road and Wood Lane likely to be the focus of the campaign.
