Breakdancing may have been born on the mean streets of Harlem, in New York, but talented dancers from Arthur Mellows Village College in Peterborough are proving they also have all the right moves.

Breakdancing may have been born on the mean streets of Harlem, in New York, but talented dancers from Arthur Mellows Village College in Peterborough are proving they also have all the right moves.A dance crew from the school in Glinton, have spun and body-popped their way into the UK finals of the national TrueSkool Breakdance Battle contest.

The nine pupils' – known as the Ironik Crew – performed a "cops and robbers" inspired routine and wowed the panel – including a professional breakdancer from Philadelphia.

Ironik were crowned Midlands champions and are now set to battle it out with 11 other schools from across the country in the grand final in London in April.

Head of dance at the school Anna Bugby said she was thrilled with the dedication and flair of the dancers, who came together at school.

She said: "We beat five other schools to be Midlands champions. We were the only crew to have a story and

costumes for our dance. It was a cops and robbers theme and they wore black and white striped socks and sheriff's badges on their T-shirts.

She added: "The win has created a massive buzz in the school and everyone wants to join the Ironik crew and the breakdancing club."

As preparation, Ironik were given chance to work with professional

b-boys – as break dancers are known –the Midlands-based Trinity Warriors.

Anna added: "They were so focused and came together as a team. They trained for six hours after school for more than three weeks."

Dancer Dannii Jarvis (15) is a member of Ironik. She was bitten by the breakdancing bug after being a part of the crew for several months.

She said: "It feels really exciting to be in the UK final. I love dancing because of how it makes you feel."

Four schools from the Midlands, four from the south and another four from the North will compete in the UK finals in Stratford Circus, London in April.

The crew is trying to raise funds for sponsorship, including training costs, costumes and travel for the competition.
