Sports fans in the city were left devastated after popular motorbike rider Craig Jones was killed in a horrific accident in a race at Brands Hatch. The 23-year-old had been tipped for the top, and hundreds of mourners, including Superbike legend Carl Fogarty, attended his funeral.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown was given a clear message that Peterborough residents wanted their Post Offices to remain open as The Evening Telegraph delivered a petition signed by thousands of city residents to Downing Street.

The petition was handed in by ET editor Mark Edwards, MPs Shailesh Vara and Stewart Jackson and leader of the city council John Peach.

Olympic fever hit Peterborough as gymnast Louis Smith headed to Beijing to make history.

The Eye youngster went to China to gain experience before a medal push in London 2012 – but after a stunning performance on the pommel horse, Louis became the first British man to win a gymnastics medal for 100 years when he finished third in the final, winning bronze.

He was given a hero's welcome when he returned home with the rest of the successful British Olympic squad, and has now turned his attention to the London games, when he will enter as one of the favourites for gold.

Polish worker Piotr Wolski, who lived and worked in Peterborough, was killed after the coach he was travelling in on a day out to a theme park crashed and slid down a bank.

Other workers on the coach were critically injured in the accident.

Peterborough was shocked later in the month when a worker at the Materials Recycling Facility in Fengate made the grim discovery of the body of a baby girl.

Police investigations traced the origin of the baby to the Midlands, although the identity of the baby has still not been discovered.
