April 2008: Congregation booms at church

While church congregations across the city have been dwindling, one city church announced it was struggling to cope with ever-increasing numbers.

While church congregations across the city have been dwindling, one city church announced it was struggling to cope with ever-increasing numbers.St Peter and All Souls Church released plans for a 1 million extension on April 4 to help accommodate its growing flock.

The Catholic church, in Geneva Street, was originally built in 1896 to house a congregation of 250. That figure now stands at more than 1,645.

More than 100,000 of damage was caused to the oldest working gate in England on April 10 after a car crashed into the 13-century gate at Peterborough Cathedral.

The force of the impact from the car dislodged large chunks of stone work from the Norman Arch.

The heavy oak gate had to be lifted out of place and sent to a specialist to be repaired. It is yet to return to Peterborough.

HEART-FELT tributes were paid to Senior Aircraftsman Gary Thompson and his RAF colleague Graham Livingstone, from RAF Wittering and Cottesmore, who were killed in Afghanistan.

The city was in mourning for SAC Thompson (51), whose inspiration for going to war was his five daughters, and SAC Livingstone (23), who were on a routine patrol in Afghanistan when a roadside bomb exploded close to their vehicle on April 13.

Plans were unveiled to transform the city's Cathedral Square into a watery wonderland under proposals for the redevelopment of Peterborough.

Ideas suggested by planners included a water feature to provide a new focal point, encouraging residents and visitors to stop and relax on new seating in the heart of Peterborough.

The fountain suggestion was drawn up in the Public Realm Strategy (Streets, Squares and Spaces), which covers the entire city centre and includes ideas to improve Bridge Street, Long Causeway, Cowgate and Westgate.

As school gates closed and thousands of children were forced to stay at home, striking teachers staged a public protest in Peterborough about pay.

About 40 teachers carrying placards and banners gathered outside Peterborough Regional College, in Eastfield Road, on April 24 to make their feelings known about the latest Government pay offer and increasing class sizes.
