Peterborough will be awash with fun for the family at the city’s first River Festival from Friday, June 19 to Sunday, June 21.

The Peterborough River Festival will run Friday, Saturday and Sunday to celebrate the River Nene with market stalls, street food, a beer festival and bar, live music and funfair to entertain all the family.

To celebrate on the Nene, water-based activities will include flotillas of cruisers from local boat clubs, river boat trips, a fleet of visiting narrow boats and on board demonstrations.

The festival will mark the important contribution the Nene has made to Peterborough’s history and heritage.

A market featuring over 40 art, craft, accessory, vintage and grocery stalls will keep children and families busy, while street food vendors will serve cuisines as diverse as Mexican and Moroccan.

Mums and dads, or those over 18, will be able to enjoy 24 different local and national ales at the bar and beer festival, with summer tipples and sangria on offer to those that don’t drink ale.

A live music and entertainment stage will feature one of the UK’s most up and coming bands, Coco & the Butterfields, as well as local acts and community groups.

Demonstrations include classic farm machinery, shire horses, bee keeping and cheese making, as well as traditional arts and crafts.

A funfair will include traditional and new thrill-seeking rides as well as a big wheel, allowing visitors to enjoy the sights and sounds over the city.

Annette Joyce, Peterborough City Council’s service director: city services and communications, said: “We already have a fantastic range of events and activities on offer in Peterborough and the new river

festival is an excellent addition to this summer’s line-up.

“Most of the events, activities and demonstrations are free of charge, making it an easy way to entertain the family over what is hopefully a great summer weekend.

“The Embankment is a fantastic space to host these events, with plenty of parking nearby and easy access from the city centre.

“If you’re looking for activities to keep your children entertained this summer check our website and the Visitor Information Centre on Bridge Street to see what’s on across Peterborough.”

Paul Kennedy, events director at Market Square Group, said: “We can’t wait to bring this festival to Peterborough and showcase all the local talent.”
