ET live blog from Sonisphere 2010: Getting heavy at Knebworth

Punk rockers Gallows will be at Sonisphere 2010.

WITH the festival season well and truly in swing, this weekend welcomes the return of Europe’s largest touring metal extravaganza - Sonisphere - to UK shores.

Sonisphere is back for a second year just a short drive down the A1(M) and looks set to battle Download Festival for the title of the country’s biggest rock, metal and punk festival.

Taking place at one of the country’s most legendary rock venues – Knebworth House – the event has seen an expansion on last year’s impressive debut.

Not only will the festival rock for three solid days, as opposed to last year’s two, but a whole new range of stages have been added.

While the Apollo and Saturn stages provide the main acts for the weekend, there is plenty to be seen in the Bohemia, Jagermeister and Red Bull stages.

And with headliners including British legends Iron Maiden and German metallers Rammstein, Sonisphere 2010 looks set to be bigger than ever.

The festival kicks off next Friday with Europe and Gary Numan hitting the main stage, before headliner Alice Cooper closes the night.

Moving into Saturday, the festival continues with an all-star cast of talent, crossing a plethora of rock genres.

Highlights on the Apollo stage include Papa Roach, Placebo and, of course, the main draw of the whole festival, Rammstein.

Other acts to perform on the day include a Tommy Lee inspired Mötley Crüe, frenetic punk rockers Gallows and Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor.

And that’s not enough to whet your appetite for musical mayhem, then Sunday is set to be just as epic – culminating in Iron Maiden on the Apollo stage.

Also performing on the same stage are Alice in Chains and Slayer, while the legendary Iggy and the Stooges will take the main slot of the Saturn stage.

However, those acts are just a selection of the more than 100 acts which are set to perform throughout the whole weekend.

Only time will tell if Sonisphere can live up to the bar set by Download, but one thing is for sure - it’s set to be a scorcher of a weekend.

Sonisphere runs at Knebworth House from Friday, July 30, to Sunday, August 1. Weekend and day tickets are still available.

Who will be the rock royalty?

Here’s The Guide’s top ten acts to catch at Sonisphere 2010:

1. Rammstein: Apollo stage – Saturday. The German band’s live show is unlike any other act, including a whole lot of fire.

2. Iggy and the Stooges: Saturn stage – Sunday. Iggy Pop has a habit of putting on a raucous and highly entertaining show.

3. Papa Roach: Apollo stage – Saturday. Seems like a strange choice, but for most twenty-somethings who remember them at their prime, they’re worth a watch.

4. Mötley Crüe: Saturn stage – Saturday. Not many bands have a member who comes with the reputation of Pamela Anderson’s former lover Tommy Lee.

5. Funeral For A Friend: Bohemia – Sunday. Familiar to Peterborough’s music fans following a recent show in the city, FFAF always put on a good set.

6. Slayer: Apollo stage – Sunday. As heavy metal bands go, you don’t get much bigger than the American powerhouses.

7. Iron Maiden: Apollo stage – Sunday. The staple of any metal fan, Maiden will be making an exclusive 2010 UK festival appearance at Sonisphere.

8. Gallows: Bohemia stage – Saturday. It’s always a chaotic occasion whenever this punk band take to the stage. This time will be no exception.

9. Alice Cooper: Saturn stage – Friday. Another one for the older generation, but that’s not to say the younger crowd won’t enjoy the legend’s show.

10. Pendulum: Apollo stage – Sunday. The Aussie rock/drum n bass stars look a little misplaced on the line-up, but they could be the surprise element of the festival.
