ORGANISATIONS from Peterborough will be rewarded for their pioneering environmentally-friendly commuting initiatives at the fifth annual Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Workplace Travel Plan Awards today (19 January). The awards take place at the SmartLIFE Centre, on the Cambridge Regional College site, Kings Hedges Road, Cambridge.

The awards are presented jointly by Peterborough City Council's Travelchoice team and the Cambridgeshire Travel for Work Partnership (TfW). There are five stages to the awards, ranging from Commitment to Implementation to the Travel Plan Excellence Award for businesses whose travel plans are now integral to their business.

The awards will be presented by Shaun Spiers, chief executive of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).

A travel plan refers to a group of initiatives, tailored to the specific needs of an organisation, that aims to promote alternatives to single-occupancy vehicle use, namely walking, cycling, car sharing and the use of public transport.

Travel plans can generate substantial savings and offer numerous other benefits to the organisation, its staff, the environment and the wider community.

An effective travel plan will contain incentives to increase the use of more sustainable modes of travel and disincentives to reduce reliance on the car; these measures are commonly referred to as carrots and sticks.

Workplace travel plans are strategies tailored to a specific company that promote alternatives to driving to work alone.

Alternative modes of transport such as walking, cycling, using public transport, and car sharing are promoted, along with flexible working practices. Business travel is also included, with measures such as pool bikes, teleconferencing or videoconferencing. There are also obvious environmental benefits in reducing the number of cars on the road.

Nicola Francis, Peterborough City Council's Travelchoice team manager, said: "Commuters benefit from improved physical and mental health along with healthier bank balances!

"Reducing the number of cars on the road brings results in cleaner air and a more effective local economy - and it is great to be rewarding so many employers who are all helping towards these goals."

Organisations interested in finding out more about the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Workplace Travel Plan Awards, and the support on offer from Travelchoice in Peterborough, should contact Nicola Francis on 01733 747474 or e-mail Travelchoice@peterborough.gov.uk
