Factfile: 180,000 swimmers visited in 1973

The land on the south side of Bishop's Road, on which the Lido is situated, was purchased by the Development Corporation from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1927.

The Lido opened on Thursday, May 28, 1936 and the then Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor Arthur Mellows did the honours. The cutting of the ribbon was followed by a swimming gala.

Just four years later, it was unlucky enough to experience a direct hit during the city's first air raid of the Second World War on June 10, 1940.

In 1973, a record 181,396 swimmers visited the Lido.

Also in 1973, a 14ft tunnel was found underneath one of the walls. It was believed to have been dug by youngsters trying to avoid the 5p entry fee.

In the early '90s The Evening Telegraph launched a successful campaign to Save Our Swimming Pool.

The Lido was designated a Grade II-listed building in 1992. This means it is a building of special interest and cannot be changed or the fabric of the building altered without permission.

The main pool at the Lido holds 500,000 gallons of water, and the Lido and surrounding gardens cover an area of approximately two and half acres.

The Lido is constructed of reinforced concrete and lined with "Cullamix" slabs.

The main pool is 2.7m deep at its deepest point, and 0.9m at the shallow end.
