Peterborough City Council is proud to support The Evening Telegraph Business Awards 2009 by sponsoring the Contribution to the Community category.

Peterborough City Council is proud to support The Evening Telegraph Business Awards 2009 by sponsoring the Contribution to the Community category. The business named the winner of this award will have proved to the judging panel its dedication into putting something back into the local community.

The leader of Peterborough City Council, Marco Cereste, is particularly pleased that the council is sponsoring the award, given that such a great deal of work is currently taking place to involve the city's business community in developing a bigger, better Peterborough.

The city council is working in conjunction with Opportunity Peterborough and the Greater Peterborough Partnership to create a strong and prosperous business community to ensure the city's continued growth and success.

Councillor Cereste said: "Businesses are key to building a successful Peterborough of the future and it is my aim that we create a business environment where both local firms and businesses relocating to the city will flourish and provide both excellent and well-paid work for residents.

"I want to ensure that Peterborough offers an environment that nurtures new businesses and encourages the growth of existing companies. I want the city council to engage more effectively with the local business community and attract good quality investment. This, I hope, will ultimately lead to better job prospects for the people of our city."

Councillor Gavin Elsey, the council's newly-appointed cabinet member for regional and business engagement, is already working to give the city a higher profile in order to attract funding from regional and even European sources.

And, in addition, the city council is working to develop innovative commercial opportunities to attract new financing for projects in the city, as well as working to identify overseas investors.

The aim of such intensive behind-the-scenes work is to ensure the city can weather the storm of the current recession and emerge as an even more vibrant and attractive place to both live and work.

Councillor Elsey encouraged local businesses to shout about their successes by entering The Evening Telegraph Business Awards 2009. And he said companies which practise good corporate social responsibility should consider the Peterborough City Council-sponsored category.

He added: "It would be great to see examples of businesses that understand their corporate social responsibility.

"They could be working to put something back into their community by assisting with funding for community projects, for example, or helping young people to learn new skills by perhaps offering placements within their company.

"Similarly, firms that are doing something to improve the environment in their local community would be ideal candidates for entering this award. The idea behind the category is to reward the business which makes the most effort to strengthen its community links.

"I am looking forward to the Business Awards 2009, as it is a fantastic way of celebrating the successes of our local businesses."
