Royal Mail: The mail market is changing

As one of the best-known organisations in the country, Royal Mail can look back on some 370 years of history, but its focus is firmly on the future and the need to compete in the ever-changing mail market.

As one of the best-known organisations in the country, Royal Mail can look back on some 370 years of history, but its focus is firmly on the future and the need to compete in the ever-changing mail market.Nationally, Royal Mail employs about 162,000 staff, collecting, proces-sing and delivering some 75 million letters each day to 28 million addresses.

In Peterborough, it employs 450 postmen and women at sites in Werrington, in Welbech Way, and its new Orton Southgate Delivery Office, which will take in the Welbech Way operation later in the summer.

Postmen from these sites deliver to 99,000 addresses at the heart of local communities, in Peterborough, Oundle, Stamford and the surrounding areas. It also handles a million items of mail and this is processed at its Mail Centre in the city by its 640 employees.

As part of the organisation's ongoing modernisation programme, it has opened a new delivery office at Orton Southgate, from which it will be delivering mail to the PE2 and PE7 postcode areas as well as Stamford and Oundle.

This operation will be supported by Royal Mail's latest delivery method equipment and provide much-needed relief from a number of older buildings that were no longer fit for purpose. It expects these changes to be completed in the autumn.

Recently, Royal Mail has been focussing on supporting small and medium businesses with its Partners for Growth campaign.

One hundred of the UK's brightest success stories – including a mix of booming small businesses, outstanding organisations and other bodies – are sharing tips for success with other companies and organisations as part of a Royal Mail initiative to help UK firms thrive.

The 100 leading lights from around the UK are being enlisted to share their stories and provide advice through a new online service developed by Royal Mail to create tailored growth packs.

A specially designed microsite asks businesses and organisations to fill in a short questionnaire and analyses the information to create the free growth packs, which will contain advice, relevant product and service recomme-ndations, as well as inspiring case studies from other companies and organisations of a similar size and type to theirs.

Advice provided ranges from information on finding new customers and keeping existing ones as well as ways of saving time and money.

The online service – available at www.royal mail.com/growth – is part of Royal Mail's nation-wide Partners for Growth campaign, supporting growth among the UK's 4.4 million small and medium-sized businesses.
