Despite the economic gloom, entrepreneurs across the country are continuing to enjoy growth with Drain Doctor Plumbing franchises.Chairman of Peterborough-based Drain Doctor Freddie Mitman remains bullish about prospects for the rest of 2009.
More than 100 Drain Doctor franchisees, staff and guests attending its recent 15th annual franchisee convention heard him say that Drain Doctor had a significant increase in overall business for the 15th year running. He added that the rate of increase was still hitting the forecast for 2009. Emphasising that a business must grow to survive, he said the theme of the convention would be "growth by design for 2009".
Mr Mitman said: "We are, in many ways, in the finest possible position to ride out the recession. Shops are suffering, sales of cars are suffering, purchases for the home are suffering, and holiday bookings are suffering, but Drain Doctor, in comparison, is not suffering."
The plumbing and drainage industry is virtually recession proof. Even in an economic downturn people need drains unblocked, and emergencies still happen.
The annual convention is organised by Drain Doctor to reward its franchisees and technicians. A number of franchisees were presented with awards for outstanding business performance and there were social events for spouses, partners and children.
Senior managers from Drain Doctor's head office gave presentations on various aspects of franchise management, including marketing and pricing.
Drain Doctor is the UK's largest emergency plumbing and drain repair business. Since 1993, it has maintained a 15-year record of unbroken growth. It now provides a 24-hour service across the country through more than 100 franchise operations.
The central principle is to deliver dazzling levels of service. This principle is also delivering solid financial results for franchisees – and helping new people in the Drain Doctor business sustain that growth.
For example, Danny O'Hara, who took over the Bradford franchise in October 2007. In his first year turnover more than doubled the previous level despite the credit crunch.
Mr O'Hara said: "This has been achieved with the support of the Drain Doctor network and a lot of hard work from my team.
"What is essential is to empathise with the customers and provide them with a practical and cost effective solution. Quality workmanship and quality customer service are the keys.
"It's not just about unblocking a drain but providing a quality permanent solution."
Mr O'Hara won the Most Progressive Franchise at the convention – the award presented to the franchisee considered to have made outstanding progress during the first 12 months or fewer in business.
