Photographers focus on 'market of opportunity'
Despite the difficulties of the economic downturn, Dave Evans and Tim Duffin have, after six months of preparation and significant investment, opened their doors as commercial and event photographers under the name of Imphotable.
Despite the difficulties of the economic downturn, Dave Evans and Tim Duffin have, after six months of preparation and significant investment, opened their doors as commercial and event photographers under the name of Imphotable.Dave and Tim have, between them, more than 40 years' experience as photographers – Dave began his career as a photographer in the Royal Navy and Tim with the Royal Air Force.
When asked why they had opened in the current market, the pair commented "this is a market of opportunity, not one of doom and gloom. If we do well now, we are going to set ourselves on the right track for the next five to 10 years".
Dave and Tim recognise that the market has changed over the past 18 months, but have found the key change being that their customers are taking their time while being more specific about their needs, a move welcomed by the company.
The recent challenges in the marketplace has, according to Dave, "identified to our clients that product presentation in catalogues and on websites is more important than ever. The growth in consumer digital cameras, initially, has an impact on commercial photography as a whole, but the need for quality images through proper lighting and composition is making us busier than ever before".
Recent activity for Imphotable has seen the pair undertake a mammoth 1,000-item product line shoot for a catalogue and web project, provide event photography throughout the UK for a number of multinationals, and provide stills photography for an upcoming movie including stars John Hannah and Joanna Lumley.
The company has a dedicated studio to enable it to work on new product photographs, provide PR images and advertising shots, while also being equipped to provide photography solutions on its customers' sites/locations.
The business's most recent acquisition is a dedicated, specialist event printer that provides prints in less than 20 seconds, ensuring its clients images are available on the spot, rather than waiting hours or days.
Imphotable sees Peterborough as the ideal location for its business because of the ease of access to the rest of the country via the A1, A14 and M1/M6, and to the rest of Europe via Stansted, combined with realistic commercial property rental rates and a proactive local council keen to help local businesses.
Both Dave and Tim believe that their company has a valuable place in the local community and not only make themselves available to charities on a "not-for-profit" basis, but are also keen to help others into the business through student placement schemes.
qDave Evans was, for many years, a celebrity photographer with work in magazines including hello, GQ, Bella, Best and others, and spent time in Dublin as a freelance paparazzi/news photographer.
Tim Duffin has worked as a photographer for various international sporting occasions, including multiple Olympic games.
