The search to find this year's top franchisee has led to the announcement of the 10 finalists, which includes Peterborough's own David & Anne Hitch of Signs Express, based at Saracen Business Park. These national annual awards, sponsored by HSBC and Express Newspapers, highlight the outstanding efforts, achievements and stories of the top franchisees in the UK.

This year’s finalists are all great examples of how dedicated they are despite today’s economic climate, and whose businesses have out-performed competitors and demonstrated Success in Challenging Times – the theme for this year’s awards.

With 34,600 franchisee businesses operating in the UK today, the achievement of being listed as one of the 10 national finalists is a huge accolade for the individuals involved.

The 10 finalists are:

n Julia Levene of Little Kickers

n Mike Smith of McDonald’s

n Sandra Redmond of Molly Maid

n Tim & Karen Lester of NBC Bird and Pest Solutions

n Surjit & Balvinder Dhillion of O2

n Sarah Skelton of Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Clubs

n David & Anne Hitch of Signs Express

n Mark Fordham of TaxAssist Accountants

n Tamsin Brewis of Water Babies

n Kieran Greene & Beverley Watts of Wiltshire Farm Foods

All 10 businesses have showed outstanding business acumen and passion, all complementing this year’s theme.

Director general of the bfa Brian Smart said: “Despite tough trading conditions the franchise industry continues to flourish, with twice as many people preferring to buy from a franchised business than a non-franchised business, in an industry worth an annual 11.4 billion to the economy.

“This year we are looking for examples of franchisees, supplemented by the support of a franchisor, committed to developing their own business during a cold economic climate.”

The winners will be announced at a glittering black-tie event at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Birmingham, on Thursday, October 1.

The Gold Winner of the awards will receive 5,000 cash from HSBC, together with a commemorative trophy and the title bfa/HSBC Franchisee of the Year. The Silver and Bronze Winners will receive 3,000 and 2,000 respectively courtesy of HSBC.
