MORE than 100 franchisees, staff and guests of Peterborough-based Drain Doctor Plumbing - the country's largest emergency plumbing and drain repair service - are set to make new commitments to further expand the business at its 16th annual franchisee convention. The long weekend of business presentations and social events in Stratford-upon-Avon will get under way next month with an opening presentation from chairman Freddie Mitman.

"In many ways we are in the finest possible position to grow as the country begins to come out of recession," he will tell franchisees. "Shops are suffering, sales of cars are suffering, purchases for the home are suffering, and holiday bookings are suffering but Drain Doctor in comparison is not suffering."

Senior managers from Drain Doctor's head office will give presentations on various aspects of franchise management, including marketing. Geoff Burch, of the hit TV series All Over the Shop, will be a guest speaker at the event.

The presentations will stress that Drain Doctor is in a people business and will need passionate leadership in developing the business and meeting its demanding standards.

Peterborough-based marketing communications consultants Smye Holland Associates will also be on hand to advise franchisees on how they can effectively communicate that message to their customers.

The annual convention is organised by Drain Doctor to reward its franchisees. A number of franchisees will be presented with awards for outstanding business performance and there will be social events.

Drain Doctor Plumbing now operates in every part of the country with each franchise run as an independent business.

The central principle is to deliver dazzling levels of service. This principle is also delivering solid financial results for franchisees - and helping new people in the Drain Doctor business sustain that growth.

Like Danny O'Hara, owner of the Bradford franchise, who won the Most Progressive Franchise at last year's convention - the award presented to the franchisee considered to have made outstanding progress during the first 12 months in the business.

Danny said: "This was achieved with the support of the Drain Doctor network and a lot of hard work from my team. What is essential is to empathise with the customers and provide them with a practical and cost effective solution. Quality workmanship and quality customer service are the keys.

"It's not just about unblocking a drain but providing a quality permanent solution.".
