Davis Langdon is working on various projects in Peterborough and the surrounding areas, working particularly closely with Opportunity Peterborough on its redevelopment and regeneration of Peterborough and the city centre. With a staff compliment of 45 in its office at Minerva Business Park, Lynchwood, Davis Langdon is able to offer cost management, project management, building surveying and health and safety (CDMC) services all from the Peterborough office.
With sustainability a key issue in the construction industry, work has almost completed on a highly sustainable office building for DEFRA in Northumberland.
Key energy efficiency and low carbon features include locally-sourced Biomass-fuelled space heating, natural ventilation, wind power via local wind turbines, small scale photo-voltaic power generation, water heating via solar panels and solar shading. Davis Langdon is finding that these sustainable elements are being required and considered more and more in large and small scale developments.
The Peterborough office has a specialist parks and infrastructure team, and an industrial team working on prestigious and award-winning schemes such as Old Market Square Nottingham, St Mary’s Churchyard Southwark, Waterloo City Square, London, and various food and produce packing and manufacturing units. Davis Langdon is also project managing a large Primark store in Telford.
Peterborough Regional College
PRC currently provides education and training to approximately 15,000 students annually, mainly in the 14 to19 age range. Facilities are currently based in a ’50s building, which has been extended and refurbished to varying levels of quality over the last 40 to 50 years in an attempt to satisfy changing educational demands and requirements. The college is seeking to replace the existing building with modern rationalised accommodation that will enable its progress to a Grade 1 College in the Further Education sector.
Davis Langdon has been appointed as project managers post Stage C on the development of the 50 million facility. The 27,500sq m campus is to be developed on the existing college site in Peterborough, allowing the current college to remain open throughout the build, and be demolished upon completion of the new accommodation. Completion of the whole project is September 2012.
Through its links with Anglia Ruskin University the college also intends to develop a bespoke Higher Education (HE) building which will provide the platform for development of HE into Peterborough. With the neighbouring Thomas Deacon Academy, these three buildings will form a unique learning environment for Peterborough, providing high- quality flexible facilities that will improve community access and help support local economic development.
This vision is in line with Peterborough’s Growth Agenda. The realisation of this project would seed the growth of a dynamic new educational quarter within the city.
Alma Road Development
This important local project involved the design and construction of 79 dwellings, a 40-bedroomed Extra Care Facility, 1.1 hectares of recreational space, plus all the associated infrastructure, drainage and service requirements.
The dwellings are a mixture of affordable housing and for sale units, ranging in size from four-bedroomed terraced houses to two-bedroomed apartments. The extra care facility is a mixture of one and two-bedroomed apartments providing tenants with open areas, a convenience store and hairdressers. The open space area provides a multi-use games area, a children’s activity playground and a large area of open space.
Davis Langdon was appointed as project manager and employer’s agent including providing cost management on this project. Due to the size and location of the scheme within Peterborough, the project has generated a great deal of interest from the local community, local government and also the housing corporation.
This has resulted in the project team taking a proactive role to ensure that the project not only achieves it objectives, but also provides the type of facilities that the local community requires.
The project was completed in August and was a successful collaborative partnership between Davis Langdon, the clients – Accent Nene and Axiom Housing Association – and contractors SDC.
