Chamber initiative a step to recovery in Peterborough

PETERBOROUGH make take "years" to recover from the recession, according to a report by independent think-tank Centre for Cities. It claimed that areas with highly-educated workforces, such as Cambridge and Edinburgh, are well-placed to bounce back. However, in the study of 64 of the UK's cities and towns, Peterborough was listed in the bottom 10 when it came to the percentage of high skills (NVQ4+) among workers.
The city, along with locations such as Stoke, Burnley and Newport, was shown to be "suffering" because people are less qualified.
The Centre for Cities added that the gap grew between the top and bottom of the economics rankings.
It said that locations which already had robust economies were more likely to grow stronger, leaving the areas which did not have strong private sectors, or good graduate skills, further behind.
"We are aware that the skills level in Peterborough is not high enough - the local business community has long complained about this," said chairman of the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce Iain Crighton.
"Opportunity Peterborough has identified adult skills as a key item in its growth strategy, and I have been invited to chair a learning and adults skills strategy group."
Meanwhile, Peterborough Chamber of Commerce has launched a new campaign to help local businesses become more successful by incorporating business improvement seminars within its safari networking events.
Topics including Improving Profitability, Networking More Effectively and Raising Your Business Profile will take place across Cambridgeshire over the next couple of months, with the campaign kicking off with a networking breakfast at the Holiday Inn Peterborough-West on Wednesday, January 27.
As well as giving delegates the opportunity to raise their company's profile across the wider business community, the event will include a detailed description of five simple steps which all businesses can take to Improve Customer Satisfaction.
Chief executive of Peterborough Chamber of Commerce John Bridge said: "Over the past 12 months more and more businesses have realised that excellent customer service will often mean the difference between earning repeat business or facing the peril of a bad reputation, and January is traditionally the time of year when businesses reassess their internal processes in a bid to improve the way in which they operate. This is why we have adapted our usual safari format in order to provide businesses with inspiration and advice which we believe will help them to do just that.
"Each event will prompt local businesses to turn their attention to a different area of their business and make subtle but effective changes to the processes that are in place.
