Veteran TV newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald was the host as Peterborough's leading businesses celebrated their success in a glittering event at the 14th Evening Telegraph Business Awards. The ceremony at the Holiday Inn Peterborough West, in Thorpe Wood, Peterborough, marked the achievements of some of the finest companies in Greater Peterborough, several of which were long-established family businesses. It crowned the best qualities in many aspect of business, such as the hard work and innovation needed to create a successful company, customer care, development of people, environmental achievement and contribution to the community, both on corporate and individual levels.
About 230 guests, which included business and civic leaders, attended the celebration. They enjoyed a champagne reception before dinner and the awards presentation.
Evening Telegraph editor Mark Edwards welcomed everyone to the awards night by stating there was "plenty to celebrate" in Peterborough.
He said: "There is much to be excited about including the city centre development, new retailers coming into Queensgate, the new super hospital and the new garden park."
After thanking the awards sponsors and judges, Mark introduced Sir Trevor, referring to his "extraordinary journalistic career", before handing over to the evening's host.
Sir Trevor entertained guests with amusing reminiscences of his life as a journalist on the world stage. He recalled live broadcast glitches regarding the John
McCarthy hostage release situation, and referring to RAF Lyneham as RAC Lyneham, and AA phoning in to ask for equal time. He recapped his time covering the US presidential election campaign, and his interviews with leaders Boris Yeltsin and Colonel Gaddafi.
Sir Trevor went on to present businesses with their awards in eight categories.
Among the roll of honour this year were a number of family-run firms such as Kiddicare, Princebuild and Amps Fine Wines.
There were only winners in the Contribution to the Community category – on the corporate side it was BGL Group, while Iain Crighton and Iain Forsythe were chosen as individual winners.
BGL Group call centre Fusion was rewarded for its development of people, Kiddicare partner Scott Weavers-Wright won Business Person of the Year, Coloplast showed excellence in customer care and Larkfleet Homes came out on top in the Environmental Achievement category.
