A SUPERMARKET has launched an investigation into claims that a scorpion found its way into a woman's home after hitching a ride on a bunch of bananas.Horrified Louise Miller says she found the tiny creature – which packs a venomous sting – on a pair of jeans shortly after buying bananas from Asda in Wisbech.
The scorpion apparently scuttled out of a trouser pocket while she was ironing and, initially thinking it was a large spider, she quickly crushed it to death with the iron.
Mrs Miller, who lives in Wisbech, said she discovered its true identity after retrieving its flattened corpse from inside the jeans.
Asda has begun an investigation after receiving a complaint from Mrs Miller, along with a photograph of the creepy-crawly. But mystery surrounds how it found its way into her home because the scorpion is not thought to have come from the same continent as the bananas, which were picked in Cameroon.
The supermarket has asked Mrs Miller to bring the specimen in for further inspection.
An Asda spokesman said: “We're confused as to how this could have been found in her bunch of bananas.
“We have rigorous inspection processes in place from the moment our bananas are picked right the way through to reaching our shelves, so we're scratching our heads as to how this could've happened.
“It goes without saying that we're very sorry indeed for any upset this may have caused. We've given Mrs Miller a double refund, but if she would like to come into the store to discuss this matter further, our store manager would be more than happy to accommodate her.”
