Will new bar be Pussy no more?

JUST six weeks after opening, Pussy Galores – the city's answer to Coyote Ugly – could be closed down following a request from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service to review the nightspot's licence.

JUST six weeks after opening, Pussy Galores – the city's answer to Coyote Ugly – could be closed down following a request from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service to review the nightspot's licence.County fire safety officers want the North Street venue's licence suspended for three months to give the owners time to put right "a long history of deficiencies."

Peterborough City Council is now considering the request, and Pussy Galores' future will be decided at a licensing sub-committee meeting on November 15.

When it opened on September 1, Pussy Galores was billed as a cross between US bar chain Hooters and movie Coyote Ugly, where women wear bright blue bikini bottoms and vests.

Today, a spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We have asked for a review of the licence under the public safety category of the four licensing categories."

Pussy Galores has also been rapped for not having a ground- floor fire alarm system, but the spokeswoman said that problem had been subsequently addressed.

In a short statement, Thomas Mellilo, who runs Pussy Galores, said: "It has been sorted. It's done.

"There are certain things that wanted doing and they have been done."

However, in a report submitted to the council's licensing authority, watch manager Robert Saddington said the building had a "history of public safety issues dating back to November 2006", while there was a "previous history of non-compliance and poor management."

Among a list of recommendations, Mr Saddington said: "The premises licence should be suspended for three months or until competent management can be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Fire Authority."

Three days prior to the fire and rescue service's submission, Pussy Galores requested permission to extend its opening hours from 2am until 4am on Saturdays and Sundays.

The premises was formerly a restaurant, but was re-branded by the Mellilo family into a venue where scantily clad women dance on the bar, after they were inspired by a similar nightspot in Amsterdam.

Last month, Pussy Galores was criticised by Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson and city centre director Annette Joyce, who said the bar contributed to the "dumbing down" of the city.

Next month's licensing sub-committee meeting at the town hall will start at 10am.
