Waste not, want not for a homegrown family feast

SUPPORT came in spades for the Green Backyard garden project on Saturday when volunteers were faced with a potential recipe for disaster. They had planned to host a wild food workshop at the Green Backyard on London Road, Peterborough, to help teach a group of children and their families about healthy eating.
The event was being run as part of Peterborough Primary Care Trust's healthy communities programme.
But when the group failed to turn up, quick thinking from the eco-volunteers ensured that the home-made bread, fish and salad and vegetables grown on the site did not go to waste.
Hungry office workers and members of the public soon dug in to ensure that an environmentally friendly 'waste not want not' ethos prevailed.
Sophie Antonelli, from the Green Backyard, said: "Although the first of our four wild food events didn't turn out exactly as we'd planned, we're treating it like a trial run so we can get it perfect next time.
"If the families and children had come along as planned they would have really enjoyed themselves.
But as it turned out we had a great time anyway and it was a good practice run."
The next wild food workshop is being held at the Green Backyard on Saturday between 10.30am and 2.30pm. All local people are welcome to attend this free event.
