Warwick out to prove he is a cut above for charity

STANDING 3ft 6in tall, Warwick Davis never thought he'd cut it as a hairdresser. Now the star of the Harry Potter films is one of nine household names taking part in BBC Three's Celebrity Scissorhands.

In just three weeks, Warwick (37) will be trained for nine hours a day to become a fully-fledged hairdressing and beauty expert.

And every customer tip donated in return for a haircut or beauty treatment at the academy in Camden, London, will go to BBC Children in Need.

A perspex podium has helped Warwick, who travels to London from his home in Yaxley each day, overcome potential problems he would have faced reaching the top of his customers' heads.

All he has to do now is to get to grips with the complicated tasks of cutting, grooming, massaging, snipping, spraying, pampering and waxing.

In his first week at the academy, Warwick customer's have already included EastEnders actor Derek Martin, who plays Charlie Slater, and TV physic Derek Acorah.

Meanwhile, Warwick has been asked to undertake some unusual challenges.

Writing on his daily blog, Warwick said: "My next client was in for a, wait for it – 'bum wax'. The first thing that springs to mind is 'why?' For what occasion would one need a hairless bum? A wedding?

"My client John had his own reasons. So, it was on with rubber gloves, and off with his hair. At one point, I felt as though I was stood overlooking the Grand Canyon. Need I say anymore."

Speaking to The Evening Telegraph, Warwick added: "I had no experience of cutting hair at all, apart from my dog a few years ago. But within an hour of arriving at the academy we were each asked to cut a client's hair. We were really thrown in at the deep end.

"At first it seemed unmanageable, but my acting talents have come in useful so I can pretend I know exactly what I am doing.

"It's a job I thought I'd never be able to do. So if it makes anyone watching have a go at something they never thought impossible, it will have been worth it."

Warwick was full of praise for his fellow celebrities, who include blonde socialite Tamara Beckwith, Radio 1 producer Aled Haydn Jones, Hollyoaks beauty Carley Stenson and former Neighbours star Ben Nicholas.

Warwick said: "There are no egos there at all. We're all mates. They are a great bunch."

The celebrities training will culminate in a live hair show in front of 100 invited celebrities and top hairdressers, on November 15, the night before Children in Need.
