Volunteer soldiers to march through Peterborough

WITH recent tragic events in Afghanistan still prominent in people's minds, hundreds of people are expected to turn out in Peterborough next weekend as volunteers who have recently seen action in the region exercise their freedom of the city.Up to 150 personnel from 158 (Royal Anglian) Transport Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps (Volunteers), will march through Peterborough city centre at a parade on Saturday, July 25 – giving residents the chance to honour their service.

Thirty-five soldiers from the regiment were deployed to Iraq last year and a number have served and are continuing to serve in Afghanistan.

The special parade will include the Mayor of Peterborough, councillor Irene Walsh, receiving the general salute when personnel, whose headquarters is in London Road, arrive at the town hall.

The regiment will march through the streets of the city centre, with bayonets fixed and flags flying to the beat of the Band of The Royal Anglian Regiment.

Councillor Walsh said: "I am delighted that the people of Peterborough will have the opportunity to honour our servicemen and women for the sacrifices they make on our behalf.

"The Freedom of the City is one of the highest honours a local authority can bestow and one which the Royal Anglian Regiment has enjoyed since 2001.

"Therefore, it will give me great joy to see them exercising their right to parade through the city in full military regalia."

Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Johnathan Symon said that it would be the ideal opportunity for the soldiers to thank the community for their support.

"Many of these soldiers have recently deployed on operations and undoubtedly many of them will continue to do so in the near future," he added.

"It is also a way of reminding our community that our TA soldiers are men and women who live and work within and without that community.

"It could be the cashier at the local supermarket or the car mechanic that fixes your car, so I hope they will spare a few minutes to come and show their appreciation and support for their local regiment."

Earlier this month the regiment completed its two-week annual training exercise in Gibraltar to much acclaim.

The regiment was awarded the Freedom of the City of Peterborough in March 2001 and last exercised its right to march through the streets with bayonets fixed and drums beating in May 2006, when Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, handed out medals to a number personnel.
