PUPILS were mesmerised by erupting volcanos and popping fireworks – but they didn't even have to leave the comfort of their own classroom to see them.Children from Braybrook Primary School, in Orton Goldhay, Peterborough, were treated to the science spectacles in a bid to show that the subject could be fun.

The project was co-ordinated by Orton Longueville School, and as well as the model volcano, youngsters got to use Bunsen burners for the first time and light up jelly babies.

Science teacher at Orton Longueville Jessica Strong devised the afternoon of activities with her colleague Nina Mentzel.

She said: “One of the aims of the science project was to show science can be exciting and dynamic.

“It was fabulous to see these primary school children so enthusiastic and involved in all the activities.

“For all of them, it was the very first time they used some of the science equipment.”

Cameron Lord (8) said: “I loved all that we did. It was brilliant and for me, it was the first time I have ever used a Bunsen burner.

“It was really nice to visit another school and the teachers were so friendly.”

Sian Brede (10) said: “One of the great things about the science project is that we didn’t have to sit still all the time.

“We moved around and did a variety of things.

“The afternoon was great fun.”
