Video: Stanground residents' fears after yet another accident

RESIDENTS in a Coneygree Road, Stanground, plagued by a series of car crashes have spoken of their fears that a child could be killed unless safety action is taken.

RESIDENTS in a Coneygree Road, Stanground, plagued by a series of car crashes have spoken of their fears that a child could be killed unless safety action is taken. In the latest accident in the road, in the south of the city, a Peugeot 106 car crashed through a garden wall.

The smash demolished the small brick wall, with the car coming to rest on top of the fallen bricks and jutting partially into the front garden.

Highway officials say it is lucky no one was in the garden at the time of the crash or that person could have been seriously hurt.

Resident Peter Maycock, who has lived in the road for the past 40 years, said he was worried that someone would be seriously injured on the road.

Mr Maycock (74) said: "There have been at least 15 crashes on the same bend in the last few years.

"I remember one crash where the driver left behind the bumper of his car – complete with number plate – after crashing through a wall, and then came back to pick it up later.

"It is a really dangerous stretch of road.

"We have been told that the latest accident, which happened on Tuesday afternoon, was not speed related. But drivers use the road as a rat run, often travelling at more than 40mph.

"There are no signs that have been put up warning people it is an accident black spot, or to slow down for the bend.

"Drivers don't always take into account the camber of the road, or how tight the corner is when they are driving on the road, and there have been a number of crashes and near misses.

"Children use the road to walk to and from school, and there are a few elderly residents who live here.

"While we have been lucky so far that no one has been killed or seriously injured, I think it is only a matter of time before it happens.

"We have asked for speed cameras, or clearer signs, but I think we will have to wait until someone is killed before action is taken."

A spokesman for Peterborough City Council said that signs had been placed on the road before, but further action may be taken in the future to slow cars down.

He said: "A vehicle activated flashing sign warning of the bend in Coneygree Road and chevron signs were installed about three years ago.

"Highways officers will re-assess the road in response to residents' concerns following this week's accident."
