Video: RSPCA rescues entangled cygnet

RESCUERS raced against time to save a baby swan that had become entangled in fishing line discarded at Crown Lakes in Farcet.

RESCUERS raced against time to save a baby swan that had become entangled in fishing line discarded at Crown Lakes in Farcet. The cygnet, which was about two days old, had its leg caught up in the line and another part was wrapped around brambles.

When RSPCA officers dashed to the scene at Crown Lakes in Farcet, near Peterborough, they discovered that the distressed bird also had a section of line wedged in its throat.

They waded into the water and worked painstakingly to cut the cygnet free from the brambles.

Several times, they feared the bird wouldn't make it as it sank into deep shock, but the hardy youngster pulled through.

It was then taken to a wildlife hospital in Kings Lynn to be given the once over by a vet.

Collection officer for the RSPCA Justin Stubbs, who led the rescue with a colleague, issued a stern warning to anglers to discard tackle to ensure birds lives are not put in danger.
