THE royal seal of approval was given to St John Ambulance's new National Distribution Centre – with Princess Anne, The Princess Royal declaring it "a wonderful thing for Peterborough".Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne, who is a patron of St John Ambulance, delighted the charity by spending more than two hours touring the facility.

The supplies section of the first aid charity was founded in London as the Stores Depot in 1879 selling first aid handbooks, bandages and medical equipment and now, 130 years later, it has moved to its new state-of-the-art base in Bretton.

On arrival at noon the Princess met the workers who are the heartbeat of the 22,000 sq ft centre and all of whom were recruited in Peterborough.

Senior warehouse operator Dale Watts, from Werrington, said: "The reaction was "wow" when my family heard I would be meeting Princess Anne."

The Princess made a short speech before unveiling a plaque to commemorate the occasion.

The new office, provided by Cambridgeshire police, will be the nerve centre of support for victims of crime in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and Princess Anne was given a special guided tour.

The Princess then took time out to speak to every member of staff and volunteers about the valuable service they give to victims and witnesses in the aftermath of crime before she unveiled a plaque following a speech by Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire police, Julie Spence.

The Princess, in her role as Patron of the National Association of Citizens' Advice Bureau (CAB), was also on hand to officially open the new CAB centre, in St Marks Street, Peterborough.
