THOUSANDS of visitors who wandered through Peterborough Cathedral's gates this weekend were transported back in time to celebrate Peterborough's heritage. The first-ever Peterborough Heritage Festival saw families browsing a wealth of stalls and displays as 3,000 years of history was brought to life.

From shopping in a medieval market to seeing traditional tradesmen and women, including blacksmiths, jewellery and armour makers at work, there was something for everyone.

The living history encampments, featuring costumed characters, performing displays of combat from the Roman, Viking, Norman and Medieval times, also had visitors in awe. And when stomachs began to rumble, visitors made their way to the wartime WVS van for tea and sandwiches.

The Dean of Peterborough the Very Rev Charles Taylor said: "This is the first time we have tried anything like this and it seems to be a success."
