RUNNERS across the city are being urged to grab their gym bags and get training for the Perkins Great Eastern Run 2009.The event was launched outside Peterborough Town Hall on Wednesday, with an opening speech by leader of the council John Peach, who declared he wants it to be "bigger and better" than ever this year.
Entries are now being accepted for the half-marathon and 4km fun run on Sunday, October 11, which starts in Cathedral Square, and winds through the city's streets to the cheering of thousands of spectators.
The eagerly anticipated event, sponsored by Perkins and organised by Peterborough City Council, attracts people from all over the region eager to achieve their goals and raise money for a cause close to their hearts.
One runner who will be the first on the starting line is Mike Hare, who was declared race ambassador last year because of his inspirational story.

He took up running and shed several stones in weight, and in the past two years he has run in several marathons, including one in Rome.
He said: "Everybody at some stage has seen the London Marathon or the Great North Run and somewhere in the back of their mind they're wondering what it's like and wishing they could give it a go. Well, to think that and not do anything about it is such a shame.
"We've launched the race today, so that gives people six months to train up and get themselves ready for it. It's an experience which will bring a lot of joy."
Longing to put the city on the map with an event on par with other running events across the country, the city council revived the Great Eastern Run in 2006 after a 10-year break.
Event director Jon Marsden said: "It's a gold standard event on the same level as the London Marathon and the Great Northern Run, and it really is an excellent event which is growing in stature."
