INSPIRATIONAL teachers, brave pupils, generous support staff and creative achievements were all celebrated at the glittering ninth annual Evening Telegraph Education Awards on Thursday night (9 July).

INSPIRATIONAL teachers, brave pupils, generous support staff and creative achievements were all celebrated at the glittering ninth annual Evening Telegraph Education Awards on Thursday night (9 July).Peterborough's Key Theatre provided the backdrop and, as the noisy chatter hushed and the lights dimmed as the ceremony began, there was a palpable air of anticipation for the schools' equivalent of the Oscars.

And the awards did not fail to deliver with a mixture of tears and cheers greeting every winning announcement from compre Michael Cross.

First up onto the stage to collect her junior Best pupil award was Bethan-May Slater, from Orton Wistow, who bravely copes with a debilitating and rare skin condition. And no sooner had she collected her trophy she was being whisked to Great Ormond Street straight after the ceremony to find out the results of her latest tests.

The excited young eco-committee from Sacred Heart School picked up the Environment award for their teacher Sandra Togher, who was absent.

Catering manager, Karen Green, fought back the tears as she picked up her support staff award saying: "It is such a shock, I am overwhelmed really."
