THEY have previously waged war on the silver screen in films including Gladiator and now members of professional re-enactment group Britannia have been wowing the crowds at Flag Fen.The bronze-age site in Fengate staged the two-day battle event over the bank holiday weekend which saw Romano-Britons fight the Saxons.

And hundreds of history fans were thrilled by the impressive weaponry on display as well as the war boats, known as curraghs.

The events portrayed took place in the 5th century when, after nearly 400 years of Roman occupation, Britain was invaded by a variety of different peoples. Flag Fen's new general manager Neil Hart said the event had received a "fantastic response". He said: "Our Britannia event was so popular last year that it broke attendance records so we were delighted to have them back.

"Even though we had one or two spots of rain and it was quite windy it did not stop visitors coming along and we had massive queues."

"Not only did they really enjoy the re-enactments but the youngsters really enjoyed doing crafts with our volunteers as well, which was great."

The visitors to Flag Fen were able to talk to members of Britannia on both days and also wander round the craft stalls which will be selling authentic reproductions of Roman jewellery and artefacts.
