City residents had braced themselves for the white stuff after numerous warnings, but the snow didn't start falling until earlier this morning.
However within an hour some places had more than an inch of settled snow and weather bosses at the Met Office predict more of the same for the next 48 hours.

Children and young people were kept home as schools closed in and around Peterborough.
Trains travelling to and from London were experiencing delays, while bus services across Peterborough were also running behind schedule because of heavy congestion on city roads. Stansted and Luton airports closed earlier today.
City council gritters took to the roads across the county to treat icy roads at 2.30am and 5.30am today.
A spokesman said they would be monitoring the weather to send out gritters again, if needed.
Casualty reduction officer Pc Mick McCready said: "Ensure your windscreen washers are topped up. It is also sensible to carry a blanket and warm clothing in your car and ensure you have a good amount of fuel in your tank."
He urged people to stay at home unless their journey was absolutely necessary.
