Video: Stanground College pupils organise their own prom

WHEN pupils at Stanground College decided to stage their own prom, they didn't do things by halves.

WHEN pupils at Stanground College decided to stage their own prom, they didn't do things by halves. For eight months, they planned every detail and organised money spinners to ensure the bash would go without a hitch.

And on Friday night (26th June), the 90 teenagers from the school will celebrate the end of their schooldays by donning dresses and tuxedos for a prom with a casino theme at the Bull Hotel.

The school, in Peterborough Road, holds its own glitzy event each year, called the SRA day, when pupils in limos arrive to walk on red carpets, enjoy a feast of music and are presented with records of their achievements.

However, the event runs during the day, and some Year 11s felt they would prefer a night time prom at a glamorous venue.

So this year, there will be an extra party at the Bull Hotel tomorrow, as well as the official do at their school that same morning.

Some youngsters felt that having a prom in the morning was not as memorable as an evening event, but today, principal Malcolm Ellison said the traditional day was unique and wouldn't be scrapped.

Mr Ellison said: "In the last couple of years, some parents and pupils have organised evening parties as well.

"The college is happy for such events to take place if parents wish to organise them, but all our efforts go into organising, supporting and maintaining our traditional and much-loved SRA day.

"In simple cost terms to pupils, our SRA day equates to about seven hours of celebration for a contribution of 5.

"Most proms cost far more for fewer hours.

"SRA day is something very special to Stanground College and we are not ready to abandon it."

Georgia Marsden (15), one of the main organisers for the evening prom said: "Everyone gets up early in the morning and gets dressed up just to walk round the school.

"All my other friends have a prom outside school and they always say they have a good night.

"We asked if we could have an evening at school but they said no.

"I think doing it ourselves will mean we will remember it more."

Georgia's mother Rita Marsden said she felt a little let down by what she said was a lack of co-operation from the school.

Mrs Marsden, from Upton Close, Stanground, said: "The school hasn't done anything to help. It's been quite disappointing for the girls.

"The SRA day is very nice, but it's not a party."

She said the youngsters had done several bag packs at Sainsbury's in Oxney Road and Tesco in Hampton to raise money for the prom, as well as handing out letters and designing posters.

She said: "The school should be proud of their year 11s. They got up and did this by themselves."
