Video: Hundreds more postal workers begin strike

MORE than 400 postal workers were expected to go on strike in Peterborough today (Tuesday) – the largest number since industrial action began two months ago.

MORE than 400 postal workers were expected to go on strike in Peterborough today (Tuesday) – the largest number since industrial action began two months ago.About 150 collection workers were due to start a 24 hours strike at 1pm today, joining 220 delivery staff and 80 lorry drivers who walked out yesterday.

Workers are angry at a raft of Royal Mail proposals to carry out changes to the business which union leaders say will have an impact on wages.

The local representative for the Communication Workers Union (CWU), Mark Cooke, said he did not expect postal services to return to normal until later in the week.

"There's a big backlog of mail in the sorting office already. We are out again on strike today so the recovery will start again tomorrow, but it will take quite some time to return to normal."

And during a mass meeting yesterday on the picket line at the sorting office in Papyrus Road, in Werrington, Peterborough, divisional officer for Communication Workers Union Barry Jennings said: "Our members will stand up and fight for the public service that the public deserve."

He also warned that a ballot of thousands of workers across the UK would begin tomorrow to seek approval for co-ordinated strilke action across the country.

Meanwhile, Paul Tolhurst, Royal Mail's operations director, has called on the CWU to "stop hurting" its customers and to call off its wave of strikes.

"Royal Mail is getting on with modernisation in an entirely fair and reasonable way which is completely in line with our existing agreement with the union on flexible working practices."

The union began a spate of sporadic industrial action in July in a bid to get bosses to rethink their plans. The action has involved workers from different parts of the service taking industrial acton at various times.

In a bid to cope with the huge backlog of mail at the sorting office, managerial staff have been drafted in to get out as much post as possible over the next 24 hours.
