Video: Farm's competition is something to crow about

WORZEL Gummidge would have been hard-pressed to compete with the new kids on the block at Sacrewell Farm's Scarecrow Festival.

WORZEL Gummidge would have been hard-pressed to compete with the new kids on the block at Sacrewell Farm's Scarecrow Festival. Some came dressed as pirates, complete with a pet crocodile, while others sported school uniforms and more casual attire at the farm in Thornaugh, near Peterborough.

The festival was the culmination of weeks of painstaking work by local schools and visitors who have been taking part in the farm's Build Your Own Scarecrow competition.

And last weekend, all the entries went on display around the farm.

The judges took a "straw"-poll to select the winning entries and taking the competition by the "scruff" of the neck was the Camping Scarecrow which won best in show.

Sacrewell Farm's promotional co-ordinator Caroline Alsop said they had been delighted with the success of the competition

She said: "This is the first Scarecrow Festival we've held at the farm and it's been so popular we will definitely hold another next year.

"In fact we were so impressed we are thinking of having scarecrows here all the time."

The winners received prizes donated by local businesses and attractions, such as John Lewis, AMF Bowling, Twycross Zoo and Burghley House.
