THERE were tears and cheers as a river of women dressed in pink snaked their way through the green fields of Ferry Meadows. The second Peterborough Race For Life took place at the country park in Peterborough last night, and nearly 2,500 mums, daughters, grans and sisters ran, jogged and walked the 5k course in glorious sunshine.

Many were dressed in colourful costumes, from cheerleaders and angels to karate outfits and bright pink stockings, as they raised more than 118,000 – bringing the city's total amount raised over two nights to a quarter of a million pounds.

Every runner had their own story and reason for running, with pictures of loved ones on their backs, and memories of friends and family keeping them going as they weaved their way along the baking hot course.

Leanne Rose (11), from Dogsthorpe, Peterborough, finished ninth in the race after sprinting across the line.

After the race, she said she had been running with classmates at Newark Hill School in Eastfield, Peterborough.

She said: "There are a few of us running to raise money for Miss Green, our teacher, who has cancer.

"She is running the race as well, and it is very important to all of us."

Mother and daughter-in-law pair Carol and Natalie Tyrrell had travelled all the way from Kettering to take part in the race.

Carol (56) said: "I had cancer in 2001 and managed to survive, so this is very important to me.

"Fingers crossed, it has gone now, but it is special to take part in an event such as this."

Sharon Piper (44) and her partner's daughter, Charlotte Hobbs (8), from Whittlesey, were running the race for the first time.

Charlotte said: "We are running the race for grandpa Fred, who has cancer. I have really been looking forward to running it, and we have raised 150."

Friends Hayley Pears (26) and Yvonne Brown (36), from Chatteris, raised nearly 500 between them as they completed the course dressed in pink tutus.

Hayley said: "The race is for such a good cause, and it is a fantastic feeling to be able to help so many people who are affected by cancer."

More than half a dozen members of Deepings Karate Club swapped their black belts for specially-made pink belts as they completed the race.

Stacey Marshall, from the club, said: "Everyone at the club has been affected in some way by cancer, and it is such a fantastic cause. We have been raising money for a while now, and hope to have more than 600 raised by the end of it."
